We usually don’t think of southern California as prone to hurricanes or cyclones, but in late September 1939, following a heat wave of several days, a tropical cyclone moving up the Mexican coast made landfall in southern California, dumping over five inches of rain on Los Angeles and producing Force 11 gale winds. According to a NWS report:
“The flooding killed 45 in Southern California, although some of these may be attributable to the rain immediately before the tropical storm. At sea, 48 were killed.”

The 2014 Barusch-Castagna Predicted Log Championship will be conducted by the International Power Boat Association and hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club, June 19-21, 2014.
PCYA and the “Santa Barbara to King Harbor” Race Committee have agreed to make the PCYA Carr Championship a partner in this race in 2014. The race will be held July 25-26, 2014, and the award ceremony will be conducted at King Harbor. More details will be available after the first of the year, but be sure and mark your calendars for this event.
Representing the West Vancouver Yacht Club, the FT 10M “Prowler” (CAN #37) won the 2013 PCYA Carr Championship. The regatta was held during Whidbey Island Race Week near San Juan, Washington. Bruce Campbell represented PCYA and presented the Carr Trophy. The winning crew on “Prowler” was Kirk Leslie (owner), Graeme Clendenan, Brian Krell, Harry Blacklock, Steve Hansen, Geoff Ott, Heather Arnold, Sandra Bitelli, Jonn Scott, Nicole Johnson, and Steffen Diett.
